Why New Year's resolutions don't work
Big change. We all want it...in fact, we want it yesterday.
So we make a big commitment and go all in...
,,,buuuut inevitably we seem to fall off the wagon.
Then we stop believing in our ability to follow through.
It's a vicious cycle.
Here's the thing. You don't lack willpower. Not at all.
Willpower is a limited resource.
Most species—including humans—are designed to be lazy. In other words, we are designed to conserve energy as a survival mechanism. It's called behavioural economics...we weigh the cost-benefit.
I repeat, you aren't lacking willpower and you aren't lazy.
You just need better systems and a way to keep the bigger picture in front of you.
If you want to get out of a rut, quit procrastinating, get motivated, or simply gain momentum and level up your game to a new level, you MUST understand the power of habits.
Habits use less energy and pave the neural pathways for certain behaviours to happen in certain contexts.
Habits either move you forward or set you back.
They can help you focus (or not). They can help you get your butt off the couch on the tough days. They can help you work toward your goals with less draw on your willpower.
Every day you take tiny actions that have long-term exponential impact on your identity, which ultimately influences the actions you take.
If you don't understand how to take advantage of this process, you are always swimming upstream.
It's time to change that.
